AROUND Lake Placid

From Camp Wauhkin enjoy day hikes in the High Peaks and Johns Brook Lodge area or day trips for canoeing on the Saranac Lakes or the Raquette River. Outings still leave time to lounge on our dock or enjoy evenings in theaters in Saranac Lake or Lake Placid. From our secluded aerie, walk to town for a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options.  We are a mile from the Ironman start; two miles from the horse show and lacrosse fields.

Some of our favorite activities are listed below, with information on many more available in the house!

IN THE WOODS

Relax on the porch with a good book, or walk down our lighted path to the lake and watch spectacular sunsets over Lake Placid. Our private boathouse includes two canoes, as well as paddles and life vests for both children and adults (use of the motorboat is not included in the rental). Enjoy a peaceful paddle around the serene waters of the lake, or canoe into town for some shopping. The play room includes a variety of board game favorites, from old favorites like Checkers and Pictionary to great party games like Cranium for a rainy day. In the evening, enjoy a cozy night in roasting marshmallows in our large stone fireplace, or gather around the piano for a family sing-along.

AT THE HOUSE

Whether you are new to hiking, planning a family trip, or an experienced back-packer, the Adirondacks offers some of the most beautiful hikes in the nation. There are several guidebooks in the house with detailed descriptions of the area, and there are great options for all skill levels. For families with young children looking for an easy day in the woods, you can climb to the top of Mt. Jo for a spectacular view of the high peaks. Families with older children can start the journey to become a “46er” by hiking up Cascade Mt. For a challenge, climb to the top of Mt. Marcy (the highest point in New York) or any of the other peaks in the Great Range. There are also a variety of trail-less peaks and backpacking trips in the area.

Note: the house includes some backpacks, waist packs, and water bottles, but if you are planning more strenuous hikes, we recommend you bring your own equipment.  There is an Eastern Mountain Sports store in town if you are looking to purchase equipment.

The town of Lake Placid includes shopping, dining, and entertainment for every budget. A variety of outlets like Gap, Bass, and Van Heusen offer great styles at even better prices, while more high end stores offer unique apparel. Visit one of several antique boutiques for unique, vintage pieces. More shops and antiquing are available just down the road in Saranac. For lunch, pick up a quick bite at family favorite Big Mountain Deli and Creperie (we recommend the Seymour or the Rocky Peak). After a day of shopping, hiking, or canoeing, get off your feet and dine at one of the luxury resorts or hotels or admire beautiful views at Mirror Lake Inn. If you’re in the mood for something more casual, stop by the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery for some great local beers.

AROUND TOWN

Take in a movie at the historic Palace Theater, where a bag of popcorn is still just a few dollars, or catch an ice-show at Lake Placid Olympic Center, the site of the Miracle on Ice (free skating is also available). The more athletically minded can rent canoes, kayaks, and bikes to explore the area either on land or on water. Children can lounge on the sand or splash in the waves at Mirror Lake, or putt away at the two mini-golf courses in the area. History buffs might be interested in the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, or the cottage of author Robert Louis Stevenson. We often enjoy visiting the Pendragon, the local repertory theatre.
